I Tried Everything
I Tried Everything is another one of my pianissimo numbers. This version of the song – which is actually one of the band’s older numbers – was originally recorded as part of a solo performance by me, Davy Lawrence, for one of the Big Arena Records series of podcasts on a cold September afternoon last year, armed only with my trusty old classical acoustic and a big head full of hangover. I think it’s a lovely little story with what at first seems like a rather morbid sentiment, but is in fact essentially quite hopeful and optimistic. A demo version with the full band – though no horns – is on Electric Baby Grand. On the original scribbled lyric sheet, it says: ‘Too sentimental for UK.’
Been Around
Yes, it’s okay for girls to sleep around, too. Actually, this is one of my favourite Enormous songs. When Ashley and I play that little melodic passage together after the solo and then again in the coda, it make the hairs stand up on the back of my knees.
